In the District of Columbia, less than a third of children are rated as “college and career ready” despite recent test gains, and it was recently revealed that lack of oversight over our schools has allowed widespread misrepresentation of student truancy and graduation rates. Ward 5 is the largest of DC’s eight wards, accounting for approximately 14% of the District’s school age children, where less than 20% of students are meeting proficiency standards and, similar to other areas in the District, some schools have fraudulently misrepresented thousands of student records.

We can do better. We must do better.

Therefore, I ask you to join me in charting a new path for DC's State Board of Education and its students.

Ward 5 deserves trusted leadership and a representative on the School Board that is deeply invested in improving the life outcomes of all of our students, especially those who have been most underserved.

As a third generation educator, former award-winning teacher, business owner, and founder/leader of a social activism non-profit, I stand uniquely ready to serve Ward 5 and bring about real change and results to improve our schools.

We need better leader and teacher training, greater oversight and evaluation of DC schools by the State Board of Education, increased school autonomy, improved collaboration between schools and community stakeholders, and the maintenance of high learning standards that promises a path toward college and careers for our students.

Thanks in advance for your support.

“I’m endorsing Zachary because I want a State BOE Rep who works on the front lines of education in our city. We bought our house in Ward 5 eight years ago, have three kids in public charters and have always been active in local elections. We attend candidate forums and go in with an open mind to listen to what candidate have to say about what they want to do. It can be demoralizing to watch well-connected, well-financed, career politicians win elections and then use elected offices as stepping stones without really caring about what matters in our communities. I don’t question Zachary’s commitment to our city’s kids because, as a teacher and education consultant, he has walked the walk. When you meet him, you know he’s the real deal. If you haven’t registered to vote yet, register. If you haven’t donated whatever you can to Zachary Parker’s campaign, donate. Let’s make sure Zachary Parker is elected Ward 5 rep to the state BOE on November 6th.”

“As a parent of 3 children in DC Public Charter Schools and a member of the DC Public Charter School Board's Parent Leadership Council, I appreciate Zachary's support of all our public schools and his commitment to working to ensure all children in the District of Columbia have equitable access to a quality education. Zachary is the only candidate working in our schools every day. He understands what teachers need to be successful as well as what it takes to turn underperforming schools around. He is highly educated, highly qualified and a breath of fresh air. We need him representing Ward 5 on the State Board of Education.”

We're officially on the ballot

Friend,

Yesterday, I submitted hundreds of signatures from Ward 5 residents to officially be on the ballot in November's general election. We are one step closer to helping chart a new path for DC students.

I am proud to run as a 10-year educator who works with our schools every single day. I am even more proud to run a people-centered campaign, focused on the issues facing our students.

In the coming weeks and months, our team will reach every corner of our Ward -- and I need your continued support.

Please consider donating again if you've donated under $200.

Thanks for standing up for DC students and with me.

Onward and upward,

Zachary
