The State intervened in the Montgomery Public Schools because of problems so bad that maintaining accreditation is a concern.  We all know that this situation is not acceptable.  I want to be part of the solution - for our children and our city.

Even before the intervention and the talk of possibly losing accreditation, we knew things were bad.  People lived in neighboring counties or commuted all the way from Auburn.  My husband and I visited our first private schools to learn more about them before our daughter even turned two.  Later, we learned about the magnet schools and looked into the traditional elementary school for which we are zoned.  At one point, we talked about whether to move to Auburn ourselves.  I wondered aloud about what life in Eclectic would be like.

Since the State intervened, we have learned that MPS only met a requirement for reserve funds on hand once in the last decade, and academic achievement was lower than any Dr. Ed Richardson had seen in his decades of education experience.  Alabama's scores were worse than the nation's, and Montgomery's were worse than Alabama's, and worse still when the magnet schools were removed from the equation.  To top it all, it will be a challenge for MPS to maintain its accreditation.  Not only is accreditation critical to students moving on to college, but it is managed on a system-wide basis, which means even the magnet schools are at risk.

Our children deserve better than this.  And they need better if they are going to have strong school years of which they can be proud and ultimately grow into successful adults. Our community needs better if it is going to continue to grow into all it can be.

I'm no education expert.  I'm a Navy brat who grew up in public schools in Florida and Tennessee.  I earned a Bachelors in Business Administration from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  I worked there and in Cincinnati, Ohio before returning to school.  I graduated from Vanderbilt University Law School near the top of my class in 2003 and immediately moved to Montgomery to work for a federal judge. After about two years, I moved down the street to the Alabama Attorney General's Office where I have been an Assistant Attorney General since May 2006.

I met my husband in 2011.  We married and bought a house in District 2 the next year, and soon had a daughter who starts kindergarten in the Fall.  I worried about where she will go to school for three years.  Now I know. The magnet schools have not worked for us, and there is no long-term promise in the traditional schools.  So, like many others, will be paying for an excellent private school.  She'll get the education she deserves, and we'll pay a fortune for it because Montgomery taxes are insufficient to support a school system that will provide an excellent education to every child.

MPS has failed my family, and the family of many others.  That doesn't mean that there are not great principals, great teachers, and great support staff.  There are, and they - along with a motivated community and the right leadership - will move all of us forward.  Join me as I try to clean up the mess.
