My name is Megan O'Donnell and I'm a born, raised and proud Delawarean. I've spent 34 years building relationships in the local community, have worked here my entire life- from serving at a diner for tips, to Corporate America, to owning my own small business- and am proud of the great strides this state has made in supporting equality.

But I am not a politician, and I'm confident I'll never fit into the mold of what people think when they hear that word. In fact, before last year I had never thought of running for office in my lifetime. On October 1, 2017 all of that changed. I am a survivor of the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. I am one of the lucky ones. I am one of the ones who is here to tell the story, but also the one who can still feel every moment. Who can feel the bullets hitting the ground around me, who can feel the gravel stuck in my knee when I fell as others around me ran for their lives, who can hear the voices of screaming. I can also hear the voices of support from complete strangers: "Keep running!" "Come this way!" "I'll help you!"

These are the people I believe in. These are the people I know we can all be. We were people from all walks of life, with different beliefs, who were there for a common purpose. We became allies, friends, supporters. I know that we all have this in us. I know that we can all come together and find constructive ways to change things for the better. But to do that, we need to listen with open minds to the opinions of others and have rational conversations based on mutual respect. I have friends that I very much disagree with on some policies, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that we have never argued. We've talked, we've listened, we've understood. We don't always come to an agreement, but often we find that the far ends of the spectrum we started on aren't as far as they seem and there are some points we can settle on easily. Here's some things I believe we can agree on:

  • Sensible Gun Ownership: I know this is a hot-button issue. But here's a sentence that I hope will make you listen: As a mass shooting survivor, I respect your 2nd Amendment rights. I know that there are far, far more responsible gun owners than there are otherwise. Which is why, if you really think about it, stricter background checks, better laws prohibiting those suffering from mental illness (both diagnosed and non-diagnosed) from gaining access to firearms and general licensing and testing requirements will not affect your ownership in the least. Contrary, it will bolster the argument that the 2nd Amendment is there to protect us, because that's what it will be doing- protecting the responsible gun owners, who in turn may one day protect us.
  • Education: I proudly send my daughters to a a Red Clay Public School in Delaware. They have received an amazing, high quality education there since Kindergarten, thanks to the wonderful teachers and staff at their school. We need to ensure that teachers have the means to provide this quality education in the future, including better funding, technology updates and programs that help them work with students at all levels of learning so that they can succeed.
  • Small Business: As someone who is a former small business owner, I can tell you how hard it is to get the funding to get your business off the ground. How many great ideas are we missing out on and how many local economic contributors are we letting fall by the wayside because they don't have the cash to get started? More grant money and more local government support and partnerships with building owners to find non cost-prohibiting spaces to house these businesses is needed to help sustain success. We need to be a small-business friendly state to build a robust economy.

I know that when we find the common ground, even if it feels like the smallest issue, it gives us something to work from, a base to build upon. And when we're working from the inside out, the journey is much simpler than starting from opposite ends and finding our way toward each other. I know that I can make a positive change; not just for Democrats or Republicans, but for the people of Delaware. And the people are what matter most.

We did it!!

I know that you might be thinking "what you are you talking about, you're only to 47% of your goal?"

And you're right, my goal remains $2000 overall, but remember a big part of that goal was $905- which is the amount needed to file to run for State Representative. And today, we did it!

Thank you all for the support- I truly couldn't do it without you. Monday, we file, officially.

Let's see what we can do, together!

Best,

Megan
