My name is Tyler Smith, and I am running for State House in District 41.

Our schools are in crisis, prisons are overcrowded, and mental health issues are being overlooked.  Our state has issues that we need fixed.  In April at the capital, I watched our legislators choose their political parties and the priorities of lobbyists over the needs of the state.  Our elected officials are supposed to represent the people of Oklahoma, and they failed us.  The issues facing our state shouldn't be Republican issues or Democratic issues--they are Oklahoma issues, and solutions should benefit the state, not private interest.  I want to do what is best for the greater good of our state. We as Oklahomans have to come together as one.   Let's put the state first and fix the problems.

I have been around public education my entire life.  My parents are both retired public school teachers.  My wife and I are also teachers.  Oklahoma has never made education a priority, and I would like to fix that. The education problem in our state is not new, and it has not just been on the decline over the past few years.  It has been a problem for decades, and for the sake of our children and state, there must be a change.   Classes are overcrowded, underfunded, and lacking resources that surrounding states are able to provide.  My focus will be providing a dedicated and transparent budget for the state and local school districts and ensuring money promised to education actually goes to education.  We must be able to see exactly where our money is being spent.      Education is not my only stance.  I have had family members affected by depression and substance abuse.  I have seen firsthand how the lack of mental health facilities in our state has affected my loved ones and many others around me.  We must invest in the health and well-being of our state instead of ignoring it.

Our incarceration rates are some of the highest in the nation and have a direct correlation with the legislature’s failure to make education a priority and its failure to provide adequate mental health resources.  Inadequately funded education and mental health programs lead the state to demand exorbitant incarceration costs. This irresponsibility leaves Oklahoma to rank among the top of the nation in incarcerations rates, domestic violence rates, and substance abuse rates. Meanwhile, we are ranked among the bottom in education funding.

When we are first in all the wrong things, we will continue to struggle to bring in new companies and business, thus failing to build revenue.  We have so many issues that need to be fixed, most of which start with education.  Let's come together and become a united state.  Please donate to my campaign so we can fix this!

“I have known Tyler since high school, but I have had the honor of getting to know him over the last 15 years that he has been married to my best friend. Tyler and his wife, Kendra, always knew and exhibited their shared value of family and aspiration for teaching. I feel that my friendship with them has given me a definite affinity or bias towards Tyler, but also a window inside the man he is. I believe he feels an inspiration to lead, not for any personal gain, but from a deep sense of need for common sense, compassion, and accountability in the leadership of our state for the benefit of our future.”

“We need a change, the definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over and expecting different results. It’s time to put Oklahoma children first and the single greatest thing we can do for our children is give them a first class education and I believe Tyler Smith will fight for our children.”
