I am seeking the Colorado State House District 12 seat to challenge the corporate influence that profits a small few while compromising our democracy, our environment, and our ability to meet the basic human needs of ALL of our population.

When I moved to Lafayette in 2009 I had recently left a career in Science education and city life in Minneapolis to focus on our growing family.  I was very lucky to come to know the Lafayette and East Boulder County communities through the intense task of raising young children (now 6, 10 and 12).  It is hard to imagine a more effective way to learn about all the work that goes into making communities shine than navigating the wide ranging needs of a family.  As I sought to learn more about the people and place, I volunteered and worked across our schools and with Boulder County volunteer programs to fight poverty.

In 2016 I joined the movement to fight oil and gas development in Boulder County.  I was shocked to understand the political landscape that made this assault on our community possible.  Neither dominant party was willing to compromise their good standing with the industry to protect us.  With a formal education background in research based science and lifetime as an educator --work on this issue came naturally to me and I have continued to grow into the activism.  I am seeking this office as an extension of this work, recognizing that the unchecked oil and gas industry is but one damaging symptom in a system designed to favor corporations.

The most pressing issue in House District 12 is imminent oil and gas development.  I am the only candidate in this race who will fight for no new fossil fuel extraction and no new wells; that means that I am the only candidate in this race aligned with climate science.  In Boulder County, I’ve worked on this issue for some time not only to protect the health and safety of our communities but also the planet.  We need bold leadership.  As an unaffiliated candidate I am not beholden to the dominant parties who are both entrenched with the oil and gas industry.

The HD12 Democratic candidate, Sonya Lewis, will be unchallenged on the June primary ballot.  The political make-up of district 12 means that Republican ideas simply do not resonate with the vast majority of the voters in this district.  As a result, Lewis was chosen to represent HD12 by a tiny percentage of the voting public—just those people who attended the Boulder County Democratic assembly for HD12.  The Democratic Party primary is a formality; the outcome is already determined.  This is not a representative democracy.  I am entering this race to provide an alternative to the establishment choice.  I will represent the people of the district rather than a political party or corporate interests.

Many working families are simply not making it in our current system. From health care, to wages, to housing and education, a growing percentage of our population is losing ground.  Colorado can do far better, but to make progress, we must mobilize people behind new and effective solutions. New leaders can change the current trajectory.  However, viable solutions are often excluded from the mainstream conversation because enacting them threatens corporate profits.  As the HD12 representative, I will work to promote innovative solutions that put people over profits.

Thank you for all the support and encouragement!  This is certainly not something I pictured a year ago, but I am looking forward to promoting these ideas across our community over the coming months.

“We need a State representative for our district who is not bound or stands independent of the corporate interests of major political parties. This is evident in bold and just positions. Theresa is the only candidate who says no new wells and no new fossil fuel infrastructure, aligning with climate science. Our district needs to put a stake in the ground on this and change the debate at the legislature. With citizens supporting Theresa in her efforts we can do this together. Let's lead the way to protect CO, our community, our neighboring districts, and our children.”
