Necessity is the mother of invention so it's no surprise that this has been a groundbreaking year for election reform! In Oregon our best course of action is the ballot initiative process. If successful, we will have elections for the first time EVER where the voting system doesn't play favorites, where every vote makes a difference, and where voting your conscience is the best strategy. This is what democracy looks like!

Lane County effectively petitioned onto the ballot and voters can vote yes on measure 20-290 "Score Then Automatic Runoff" on November 6th. Until then we are all in trying to spread the word, grow the coalition, and earn support from voters.

Here in Multnomah County we also ran a ballot initiative campaign and made major headway with an almost fully volunteer effort. If we'd had the funding we could have gotten STAR Voting for Multnomah County passed this year, but working with what we had we decided to keep saving so we can hit the ground running with a full funded campaign that can be effective rather than spend our savings and still not make the cutoff. This is the biggest county and the seat of the biggest population center in Oregon. We need your help to lay the groundwork, grow the coalition, and fund this project!

Simply give each candidate a five star rating.

With STAR Voting you can vote your full, honest opinion! Show how much or how little you like each candidate and also who you prefer to who. More data collected and more data used means more accurate and representative results.

The implications are groundbreaking.

The STAR Voting movement hit Portland in the weeks following our last presidential election and quickly grew to a non-partisan grassroots movement that caught the nation's attention. This reform offers cutting edge election accuracy, honest voting and strategic resilience, and a perfectly equally weighted vote. This is real choice and real accountability! STAR Voting gets to the root of the problem and finally puts the power to the people's hands, where it belongs. This reform has the potential to unite the election reform movement and finally allow us to be effective on every other issue we care about.

Running a ballot initiative campaign isn't cheap:

So far we are a 100% volunteer run organization and we've come a long way. It's time to level up! We're fundraising to hire staff, go all in with marketing, and outreach, and to raise the awareness we need to get this initiative passed. We're thinking big with staged goals and timelines so that no matter how much we raise, that money will be used effectively.

Goal 1: Education

If we raise $2000 we can pay for professional video campaigning, graphic design, and advertising to get the word out to 10s of thousands of people. Videos and other media can exponentially increase our name recognition and get people educated and informed. We already have some great content, top notch pro volunteers, and an electronic billboard downtown, all for free, so our cost for this is dirt cheap!

If we raise $6,000 we can pay for that and also cover all the printing costs associated with a sustained educational campaign.

Goal 2: Outreach

If we raise $23,500 we can pay for all that and also hire a full time dedicated staff member to run the campaign, be our spokesperson, do presentations, go to meetings, run our online presence, and manage volunteers and interns for 6 months.

Goal 3: Paid Canvassers

If we raise $65,000 we can hire a full on canvassing team to get us the required 28k signatures (including a buffer) at a bare bones average of $1.55 per/signature. The sooner we meet this target the better. Here in Multnomah County we only get 6 months from campaign launch to signature deadline. This requires a team of paid signature gatherers in addition to our volunteers to get it all done. The timing of when we meet this target will determine which ballot we aim for. Regardless, we need to be prepared to hit the ground running with funding, a broad coalition, and a fully trained and effective team.

Twin initiative in Lane County turns in signatures needed to qualify for the November ballot!

At 3:30PM on June 21st at the Elections Office in downtown Eugene, OR, the leaders of the STAR Voting twin campaigns met with elections officials to turn in over 14,800 signatures.

Over 11,500 verified signatures were needed to get STAR Voting on the ballot and the task had seemed almost insurmountable, as Lane County Elections insisted in upholding a deadline two weeks before what was outlined in the county charter. But with a flood of public enthusiasm, positive press coverage, public support from local organizations, and a valiant effort from both volunteer and paid signature gatherers the campaign was able to pull through with a last minute victory! With the crew collecting signatures right up to the turn in they were finally able to submit a total of 14,859 signatures; enough to allow a 28% non-validity rate and still qualify.

So what does this mean for the Multnomah County Campaign? Everything! This is a statewide movement and many key organizations and political leaders have told us that if we can prove that we are politically viable and get on the ballot, they'll step up and meet us halfway. Now's the time to show them we mean it, that this campaign is thinking big and working long term. Not only do we have the proposal that delivers on all our goals, we have the tenacity to see it through!

Here in Portland, as our focus shifts to longer term strategies like education, outreach, lobbying, and coalition building, we need the funding to maintain our pace now more than ever. Our first launch date was stifled by new policies around Facebook's political advertising. Our boosted posts were shut down part-way through our first day, and we just now received clearance to advertise and share our content as a verified political organization. Consider today to be our second launch! We're back on our feet and it's time to share and donate like so many of us did on Day 1. We're in it to win it!
