I’d like to introduce myself and tell you all a little about me and why I’m running for City Council. I am a happily married 35 year old father of three who moved to Santa Clarita in 2015. After much research and careful consideration, we decided to make Santa Clarita our home. We choose Santa Clarita for a number of reasons, including; high ranking schools, close proximity to Los Angeles, and a friendly middle class atmosphere. I work for the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power as the Chief Safety Engineer managing the quality assurance and control program for Generation Station repairs and maintenance. I also oversee the State compliance measures for permitting and inspections of pressure vessels. I am well versed in regulation and navigating different levels of government. My wife and I felt compelled to buy a home and therefore bought our first home just over a year ago. I currently attend Cal State Northridge pursuing a Masters in Public Administration and will complete that by summer of next year. My beautiful wife and I have been married for almost 11 years. I have three amazing sons whose names are Alex, David, and Kevin. My family is the light of my life and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for them. I am a military veteran of the Navy and the Army. The military is where I received my education as a nuclear operator and received a Bachelors in Nuclear Engineering Technology in 2013. I feel that my work experience and educational background and aspirations uniquely qualify me for the position of city council member.
-Why am I running for city council? I am running for city council to help guide our city into the future. The current council lacks serious leadership for the challenges ahead. Our city is continuously growing larger with everyone seemingly content on business as usual. I want this city to be a place that purposefully changes for the better, as apposed to it’s past complacency. Change is inevitable and should be embraced.
-What do I plan to accomplish as a City Council Member? I plan to establish a better representational structure for the council by having a district election vs at large, adding more seats to the council, exploring the possibility of a mayoral position, increasing the viability, access, and efficiency of our public transportation systems by exploring funding grants through the state, improve our traffic light system to alleviate congestion and reduce traffic jams; bring more transparency to government decision making process; find real solutions through intergovernmental collaboration and non-profit partnerships on the issues of homelessness, drug use, and economical growth.
-What are the most important issues? Guiding growth; while the city has experienced growth year after year, we have not properly addressed how to handle it. Issues that people are concerned with correlate to our city’s size. Traffic, homelessness, crime, drugs, and well paying jobs are not a huge concern of the current council; as our tax dollars are going towards planting trees and paving medians with bricks. A city of Santa Clarita's size should stop trying to play the small town card and realize that the population warrants a serious adjustment in how we approach governance. I hope this gives a good overview of myself and some of the issues I would like to address. I have a website going up (www.chriswerthe.com) and will have more content added as time goes on with updates through here and other social media, so please like and share my Facebook page. Also, please feel free to message me with any questions, comments or concerns. I plan on setting up a meet and greet in the near future.
