Meet Omar

Aurora needs a champion who will put its people first. The son of a hardworking union bus driver and a college professor, Omar Montgomery is running for mayor because he believes that everyone who lives and works in our city deserves fair opportunities for success.

With a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and dual Master's Degrees in Public Administration and Education, Omar has spent the last ten years in Aurora working on city boards, in non-profit leadership, and advocating for Aurorans on both local and national issues.

The results of that work have included improving relationships between law enforcement and our neighbors, bringing new small business loans & grants to North Aurora, and creating new mentorship programs for Auroran youth.

Now, he’s ready to use his expertise to help city hall, business, and community work together to solve the complicated challenges facing our growing city.

Our Aurora

Our people have always been the source of our city's potential. But Aurora is at a crossroads. Rising costs of living and flat wages are pushing residents out. Inaccessible processes make it difficult for regular Aurorans to get involved in decisions that have far-reaching effects on their homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces.

Our city is in need of reconnection. My vision is for an Aurora that is inclusive, transparent, sensible, and thriving.

On the Issues

Housing. Our Aurora can only thrive if all of us can afford to call it home. But rising living costs and flat wages have made it difficult for many in Aurora to stay in place or purchase their first home. Most Aurorans paid more than 30% of their annual income on rent in 2015, and our homeownership rates are below the national average.

Smart Development. Our Aurora has experienced incredible growth and opportunity because of our workers and small businesses. That’s why I believe new development should never come at the expense of our residents' homes, livelihoods, or health.

Building bridges in community

Friends,

I'm running for mayor because I want to help everyday residents connect with local government.

That's why getting out into community and meeting with the people has been my most favorite thing about campaigning. But sometimes it's hard to keep track of everywhere we've been!

That's why I'm proud to share that you can now keep up with all of my latest work on our brand new community page. Here's what you'll find:

  • Our small business spotlight, where we highlight entrepreneurs we meet in community.
  • Photos & video from meeting and celebrating different parts of #OurAurora, from Cinco de Mayo to Ramadan.
  • Written recaps of ways I'm working to serve our community daily.

All of this work is possible thanks to YOUR amazing contributions. Thank you.

- Omar

110 more days

Dear #TeamOmar,

Growth in Aurora has reached a crossroads. I'm running for mayor because I want to our communities to lead the way in determining what our shared future looks like.

That means we need community's help in order to win!

We're officially 3.6 months away from our first reporting due date. With such big names in the field, this will be a historic fundraising year for Aurora's municipal races. All eyes will be on our campaign to see how much we've raised to beat our opponents.

Can you help us reach our next goal by committing to donate $36.00 per month?

In just the past few weeks, your contributions have helped us:

  • Hire paid staff to improve our administrative operations
  • Begin writing & developing commercials telling my story
  • Design mailing campaigns in order to reach new voters

Not only that - the community is ready to stand behind us! I was able to attend five outreach events in different neighborhoods in just the past 10 days thanks to volunteer energy. By donating today, you'll help us hire even more staff - and we'll be even better equipped to turn that community energy into recruitment, activities, and votes.

With gratitude,

Omar Montgomery

My biggest opponent just held a fundraiser this week. We can't get left behind!

Friends, a lot's changed since I started my campaign last fall.

We launched our official website (www.omarforaurora.com). We held a successful volunteer kickoff event, and now have a dedicated team of volunteers knocking on doors & making phonecalls every weekend. We've attended community meetings, hosted meet & greets, and continue to hold regular conversations with residents about the things that matter most to them.

It's paying off! We've received endorsements from city councilmembers, state senators & representatives, state & local school board members, and county commissioners - and more news is coming soon.

But we aren't the only ones working hard. My biggest opponent--former congressman Mike Coffman--just held a fundraiser this week.

If we're going to win against a big name opponent, we need to expand our reach! We're raising $1,000 to purchase yard signs, postcards for voters, and a video commercial. Every dollar counts.

Can you donate $50 today to help the entire city of Aurora hear my message?

The work continues!

Dear #TeamOmar,

What a whirlwind two weeks it's been! Here's the latest -

===================

Your contributions enabled us to order our very first batch of walk lit, which is helping us spread the word about our vision throughout the city.

Check the video for a sneak peek!

===================

State Senator Nancy Todd and Aurora Public Schools Board of Education Vice President Dr. Kyla Armstrong-Romero have officially endorsed our campaign. We are proud to have the support of elected officials who have demonstrated such a strong commitment to improving life & opportunity for our youth and seniors.

Read what they had to say here.

===================

Last fall, I was introduced to an extraordinary program dedicated to making financial independence a reality for immigrant women and refugees who are pursuing their college education. Last Sunday, I was able to work with Harvest Church, Village Exchange Center, Arapahoe County Commissioner Bill Holen, and Second Chance Bikes to donate 17 bikes and hygiene kits to the "Sisterhood in the Neighborhood" program.

Watch video from the announcement here.

===================

From phone banks, to meet & greets, and to visiting our local schools--my team and I have been all over Aurora this past week getting a better understanding of what matters most to our residents.

We're looking forward to continuing that work at our Volunteer Meet & Greet & Canvassing Kickoff tomorrow. Your donations have made organizing this event possible--from facilities, to recruitment efforts, to food. I hope you'll consider joining us!

===================

#OurAurora is continuing to build strength. More to come soon!

With gratitude,

Omar Montgomery
