Dixie School District, located in San Rafael, CA, was named after the Confederacy during the Civil War. It's time to change the name. Our public school district’s name should welcome everyone.

Your pledge will only be processed if the Dixie Board of Trustees adopts a new name and needs additional private donations to cover the costs.

United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley took down the Confederate flag when she served as Governor of SC. Many schools no longer sanction “Dixie” as their school fight song including The Citadel, a conservative military college, and high schools in AR, TX, AL and VA. Dolly Parton, who has donated more than 100 million books to children, removed "Dixie" from her business name. We can change too.

“I would like to write in support of the Dixie school district's renaming. Demographically, this district is majority Caucasian. Many in our district do not experience racism on a daily basis (institutional or more blatant), so they don't see the name as a problem. Out of sight, out of mind. Especially, in this current political climate, keeping a confederate name (despite "good intentions") supports racism in this country. When I first bought our home in this district, I thought the name was very off-putting. People who grew up here are so used to it, they see it as harmless. Just because someone is nostalgic for a name does not negate our civic responsibility. Changing the name would be a huge step towards future inclusivity & diversity. Please support the name change!”
