To volunteer, please join us at

Our hard work in 2018 paid off, but the stakes are even higher in 2019 and 2020. We need to keep the momentum going in order to see our strategy through and ensure a more balanced redistricting process in 2021.

In 34 states, the state legislature controls redistricting. This means that who we elect to our state legislatures in 2019 and 2020 will have huge consequences up and down the ballot for the next decade. That’s right - redistricting will not happen again until 2031. If we want Democrats to have a fair shot at winning seats in Congress for the next 10 years, this is our last chance to win state races and make that possible.

This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity. You can bet that Republicans are working hard to win these seats, so there’s no time to rest.

What Your Contribution Will Support

Your dollars will help us to:

  • Double the number of races we support across 2019 and 2020
  • Grow new volunteer teams and local partnerships on the ground
  • Work with local stakeholders to identify and fill critical gaps in the candidate pipeline
  • Improve our tech infrastructure to further empower our teams to be strong organizers in their own communities

Who We Are

The Sister District Project is a national grassroots organization that seeks to harness the passion, creativity, and dollars from deeply blue areas and channel it to areas where Democrats are not fairly represented at the state level. We “sister” blue places with purple places to turn the map blue.

Since launching in the wake of the 2016 elections, the Sister District Project has grown to more than 45,000 volunteers across the country. Our volunteers have raised more than $1.1 million in grassroots cash donations directly for our candidates. We have made 256,482 phone calls, written 323,111 postcards, knocked on 78,934 doors, and sent 463,750 text messages.

We are developing strategic partnerships on the national and local levels with EMILY’s List, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), Swing Left, Indivisible, Flippable, and Onward Together, along with countless other progressive organizations and local groups.

The Sister District Project is also proud to be an organization founded and led by women, including women of color.

Why We Focus On State Races

  • States are critical to securing fairly drawn districts and fighting back against gerrymandering and voter suppression.
  • States are incubators of strong progressive policies and leaders.
  • State level campaigns are often small and undernourished, so volunteers dollars and hard work can have an outsized impact.

How It Works

We implement national strategy (carefully vetted races called “Sister Races”) through local action (volunteers organized into home district teams).

   National Strategy

Our powerhouse research team digs deep into the data to find the most promising districts where we can (1) flip chambers blue, (2) hold blue chambers, or (3) make inroads into badly gerrymandered districts, then we talk to key stakeholders on the ground to learn what the numbers cannot tell us. We prioritize races that are highly strategic and competitive, and candidates who will help us build the equitable, diverse democracy that we hope to see.

   Local Action

  • You sign up to be a volunteer with Sister District at our website,
  • We connect you with your home district team, which is led by volunteer District Captains.
  • We handpick Sister Races that are winnable, strategic, and have a great candidate.
  • You work together with your local team to fundraise, phonebank, postcard, textbank, and if you can, travel to the Sister Race community to knock on doors and get out the vote.

Just in! 2019 Sister District candidate endorsements!

Sister District is proud to announce its first wave of 2019 candidate endorsements!

Our starting slate includes 8 Virginia candidates and 2 Mississippi candidates who are running for critical state legislative seats in 2019. You can find information about each candidate and details about how to support their campaign on our website.

Our volunteer teams are already working hard to help these Democrats win. Thousands of Sister District supporters have been matched with Sister Races so that they can start phonebanking, postcarding, and fundraising activities on their behalf.

But we are just getting started.

In the coming weeks we will be rolling out additional candidate endorsements, and the more muscle we have, the more races we can support in 2019. Will you help us recruit and train more volunteers by backing our Crowdpac campaign?

November is just seven months away, so let’s get to work! Contribute to our Crowdpac campaign today.

Imagine what we can do in 2019!

In case you missed it - our 2018 numbers are in! Take a look at the Sister District Project 2018 Impact Report.

Your support helped us double our volunteer impact across nearly every metric last year! The best part is that the dedicated teams of year-round volunteers we built in 2018 are already on the ground right now, doing the early, essential work to help Democrats win even more seats in 2019.

As you know, districts will be redrawn after the 2020 census. That’s why we’re fighting for critical state legislative seats in 2019 and 2020 that will determine whether or not Democrats have a shot at fair districts over the next 10 years.

With your ongoing support, we can add additional teams, recruit more volunteers, and deliver even more blue wins for years to come. Help us build a lasting, nationwide network of Democratic volunteers by backing our Crowdpac campaign today!
