I am Brooke Shanley and I am running for Alderman-at-Large for the city of Aurora, Illinois. Aurora knows me as a fourth grade dual language teacher, local union president, and a strong voice in my community but, above all, I am a bold leader and savvy negotiator who values justice, equity, and fairness.

Fifteen years ago, I found my calling, educating our youth and making a difference in the lives of our children. Now, I will bring my unique skill set and educator's perspective to the Aurora City Council and make a difference by working to lower property taxes, making ethics a priority, and putting the people of Aurora above politics.

For me, being Alderman-at-Large is much more than a title. It is a responsibility to represent and advocate for each and every Auroran; regardless of zip code. I believe that Aurora is a great place to live because of the people who live here. I will be an Alderman-at-Large for the people and will make your voice heard on the Aurora City Council.

I am committed to:

  • Working with local leaders to lower the property tax burden to ensure no Auroran is taxed out of their home

  • Enacting a comprehensive ethics ordinance prohibiting contributions from contractors seeking to do business with the city and creating increased transparency in reporting conflicts of interest

  • Being engaged, responsive and transparent, putting people above politics, and  providing open lines of communication to listen to you and keep you informed

  • Fiscal responsibility, working collaboratively with city leaders to identify and eliminate redundancies and create a more efficient budget that accurately reflects Aurora’s priorities.

My experiences have equipped me with the ability see the big picture and break it down into achievable components, to build relationships, to organize people around a common goal, and to see how every facet of a community impacts students’ learning and development.  When we keep the future of Aurora at the heart of our decision making, we are able to positively impact the entire city. I hope to have your support in creating a brighter tomorrow for Aurora.

“I’ve known Brooke through our work with the union. Her leadership skills, enthusiasm, and energy will serve the people of Aurora well. I grew up on the east side of Aurora in the house my great grandfather built in 1904 and value the diversity and history of my home town. I recommend and support Brooke for alderman!”

“I am a fellow educator and met Brooke when we were enrolled in the education program at Benedictine University. Even during college Brooke was an advocate for children, working through a respite program with exceptional children - her dedication and care was palpable. Over the years our paths have diverged both in proximity and education but we have kept in contact and her concerns for the students she teaches and their families is always a topic of conversation. I can not think of anyone more dedicated to public service than Brooke, she is deserving of everyone's vote.”
