The Future of Hampshire College is in our hands. We need your support to ensure a fall 2019 class is enrolled, and to protect the future of Hampshire as we know it.

In President Nelson's shocking January 15th announcement, she explained that the board of trustees would vote in just over two weeks on whether or not to admit a fall 2019 class. The entire faculty and staff, including the deans of the colleges were blindsided. Not a single person has come forward saying they had been engaged or even informed by the administration regarding this announcement. The prospect of not accepting a fall 2019 class threatens the job security of hundreds of dedicated faculty and staff, and would be a rushed decision that prevents democratic engagement from the affected community members.

More concerning still is the complete inadequacy of the administration fundraising efforts. A number of well resourced donors concerned about Hampshire's future have confirmed with faculty that the office of advancement has not reached out to them. Others who were contacted were not given the full story in order to make an informed decision. This has left key donors in the dark, who may have otherwise been inclined to make major donations had they understood that the admission of this years class, and the very future of Hampshire was on the table.

In the same announcement, President Nelson asked,

"How do we retain what has made Hampshire so successful for the last five decades while solving for the challenges of 2020 and beyond?"

We, the concerned faculty, staff, alums, and students of Hampshire college know that what has made us so successful is the dedication of the community!  We can't expect to block a fall class, fire hundreds of seasoned staff and faculty, and then reconstitute Hampshire from scratch. Not accepting a class endangers the livelihood of hundreds of staff and faculty who have committed their lives to Hampshire college. The culture created by the people here is irreplaceable, and must be conserved along with the people who make Hampshire the incredible learning laboratory it is!

With your support, we can demonstrate to the board of trustees that our community will support a fall 2019 class, and is committed to protecting the future of Hampshire as we know it.

The Board's Vote, and Next Steps

We are incredibly grateful for the demonstrations of solidarity from nearly five hundred members of the extended Hampshire community. Your support has been tremendously encouraging in the midst of this challenging ordeal.

On Friday night, the board of trustees voted not to accept any regular enrollment students for fall 2019 or spring 2020. They did vote to welcome early decision students, and students who had deferred enrollment from the past year, a total of 77 individuals. An admissions letter to these students made it clear that the college can only guarantee their enrollment for the fall 2019 semester. It remains to be seen how many of these 77 will choose to enroll.

We do not believe the conditions of pledge conversion have been met, and many of our pledgors have expressed their agreement with this analysis. This decision likely means massive layoffs for staff and faculty in the coming months, and an uncertain future for all students, current and future. In order to ensure that none of our supporters feel misled or taken advantage of, we are seeking to have all pledges cancelled. This is the only way to guarantee that no one is made to give a donation against their will. We are currently working with Crowdpac's administrators to see if we can universally cancel pledges or if pledges must be cancelled individually. You will be notified as soon as we have an answer.

We still need your support! We will soon be reaching out directly to request our backers roll their pledges over to support faculty and staff during this time of transition and financial uncertainty. Because of the fluidity of this situation, a funding platform to facilitate this has not yet been established. Thank you for your patience while we work out these critical details.

As we collectively determine how to navigate the coming time, we are profoundly heartened to have you with us. Thank you for your commitment to ensuring any transformative changes at Hampshire college are just and democratic, and supporting the wellbeing of our community. 63 donations! Almost $30,000! Let's raise the bar before the vote today!

While faculty, staff, student, and alums have been united in their demand to push the vote back to allow for more transparency, deliberation, and fundraising, the vote is still scheduled for today. Let's raise the fundraising bar to put the pressure on, and swing the vote our way! Can we hit $35,000 in the next hour and a half?

This fundraiser will be sent directly to the board of Trustee's today at 11:30 AM EST, to ensure they know we are willing to put our money on the line for Hampshire's future. Before then, let's hit $35,000!

Please! Share, Tweet, Follow, and Donate! Call your friends directly and ask them to do the same! These next few hours are more critical than ever! #F19
