We have the power to write a new story for our schools.
In our story, every child has a guaranteed safe and stable future. In our story, entire communities are built around supporting our students. In our story, CCS parents and teachers don’t just have a seat at the table — we control the table.
For too long, a wealthy and powerful few have pit our neighborhoods against our schools in a fight for resources. They say there’s not enough funding to build safe schools, but give millions away in tax breaks. They say our kids come first, but they shut parent and teacher voices out of the conversation. They say we’re the “Opportunity City,” but they won’t fight for the opportunities our children deserve.
It’s clear that their story was designed to keep us divided. But together, we can create a Columbus of resource-rich classrooms, quality pre-K, livable wages for CCS staff and full-service community schools that meet the needs of our families and neighborhoods.
Making public education a quality priority. The School Board should be the most relentless advocates for our students. Before we can secure the funding our children and teachers need, we need to take a hard look at our priorities. We need to end corporate handouts, commit to lobbying the Statehouse for more resources and start delivering on our promises as a district.
Building Classrooms into Communities. When our schools thrive, our neighborhoods thrive — and vice versa. When we build strong pathways of communication and collaboration between our schools and our neighborhoods, we create the Columbus students deserve. That means more wraparound services, a wider spectrum of internship opportunities and integrated community-school partnerships that build community-wide support to improve our schools.
- Setting a Standard of Dignity and Justice. We can’t foster quality learning environments for our kids and teachers at the expense of their basic human rights. We need school facilities that are clean, safe and temperature-controlled, a culture of trauma-informed care, and a district-wide commitment to end the school-to-prison pipeline.
