For me to win this election and get to work helping create equitable, supportive, and excellent schools for our kids, I need your financial support. Your donations will go toward the costs that add up in a campaign; paying for printing of literature for canvassing efforts, buttons for our supporters, yard signs, and social media marketing. I have thought long and hard about whether I needed to spend money on this campaign. I would much rather funds go towards more critical and urgent needs of our community members. But then I think of the long term effect that the policies made by our school board will have on our youth and its worth fighting for. I hope you'll help me. Every dollar counts. Each flyer, each button, each sign reaches more people and brings me that much closer to winning this election. Together, we can do this!

A little about me:

Our family moved to Bend over six years ago and we immediately fell in love with this community of kind and engaged citizens. It is a great joy to be able to raise my three kids here. I currently serve as the Pastor for Justice and Mission at Bend First Presbyterian Church and as a Co-facilitator for the Central Oregon Immigrant Solidarity Network. Prior to moving to Bend, I worked as a school counselor in the US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Public School System. I have served as a school volunteer here in Bend, and a board member of both Bend 2030 and the Homeless Leadership Coalition. I am a dedicated community leader, a passionate supporter of all of our kids and families, and a relentless advocate for our educators and I'm excited about this opportunity to serve our schools!

My promise to you:

1. Student and educator support

In my work as a school counselor at the elementary and high school levels, I learned the impact that social-emotional support can have on the wellbeing and success of our students. I will use that knowledge to advocate tirelessly to ensure our kids have the support necessary to succeed. I also know what policies actually look like in the classroom – good policies and bad ones. My classroom experience will bring an important perspective to board decisions that affect our classrooms.

2. Equitable, safe, and inclusive schools

No student should miss opportunities because of their social status, gender identity, disability, religion, or ethnicity. We must prioritize equity, safety, and inclusion for ALL students. I have 15 years of experience working to help break down barriers facing marginalized communities. My expertise will help create safer schools and decrease achievement gaps.

3. Engaging communities

I have a passion for shared community life, lifting up one another, and helping shape a community where all children will grow and thrive. As your School Board member, I will actively engage our community so that together we can support our students, families, and schools.

“I endorse Shimiko because the children, parents and teachers in our community deserve a school board that is singly focused on our schools and not beholden to the private interests of the developers. Shimiko has been a tireless advocate for those in our community who don’t have a voice. She is committed to making an impact so that all of our students are recognized as worthy of our respect and are valued for their uniqueness. Shimiko lives these values as an active member of our community. She is not standing on the side-lines. As a member of the Bend-La Pine School Board, her ideas and leadership stem from directly seeing how policy ideology plays out in the classroom.”
