I’m a lifelong Green Bay resident, a West High graduate (class of 1992), and a graduate from UW-Green Bay with a degree in Communications. I’m the mother of two daughters, both of whom attended GBAPS (Lincoln, Franklin and West). I work at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in IT as a Business Systems Analyst. My job is to work with different departments to define and correct problems — sometimes it’s a technical solution, sometimes the solution is changes to processes or procedures. I would bring both my personal experience as a student and parent and my work experience as a Business Systems Analyst to the Green Bay School Board.

My experience with the Green Bay Area Public Schools, both for myself and my daughters, was extremely positive. That doesn't mean I think our schools are perfect and can't improve; it just means that I'm coming into this campaign with a love of our schools and a desire to serve my community and to use my skills and talents to address the challenges facing our schools today.

I don't have all the answers. I have opinions, just like everyone else, but I recognize those for what they are — my thoughts and ideas based on my limited understanding of the issues. Whoever wins the open school board seat will have a learning curve, and I think it's key to enter this campaign with an open mind, a willingness to listen, a genuine desire to support our schools, and a commitment to research and understand each issue as it comes up.

I believe that everyone on the GBAPS School Board is there because they recognize the importance of our schools and the huge positive impact a high quality public education can have in a community. While I won't always agree with everyone on the school board, that fundamental belief — that everyone's goal is to do what's best for our schools — will allow me to find common ground and collaborate with other members of the school board so we come up with the best solutions for our schools.

“Dawn is better than anyone I know at breaking down processes to get the best results. She respectfully questions people and helps them articulate exactly what they need and why so they can create a better way to accomplish their goals. She has boundless energy and is dedicated to making an impact. As Dawn’s co-worker at NWTC, I have the opportunity to work with her every day and see how much people and processes are improved when she’s part of the team.”

“Dawn is my older sister by nine years — which means we go way back — and I couldn’t be more thrilled that she’s running for the Green Bay Area Public School Board. My conviction that Dawn would be an amazing School Board trustee doesn’t stem from any particular policy idea she has — although the fact that she was out protesting with my brother, Ned, and me during Act 10 makes me confident in her dedication as an ally to teachers — but from having a deep understanding of who she is as a person. Simply put, if you’re looking for a “good person” — someone honest, hardworking, and dedicated to doing the right thing — you’re not going to find anyone better than Dawn. I’ve actually worked in quite a few different career fields, and education was by far the most challenging and complex. I often get frustrated by folks who’ve never actually worked in the schools but seem to think there are easy answers. There aren’t. Seriously. And knowing Dawn, I know that she will approach the challenges facing education today with the thoughtfulness and dedication necessary to make the best choices she can for the children of GBAPS. As a mom of two current (and one future!) GBAPS students, I’m thrilled at the idea of having Dawn on the board. The quality that I am most excited about Dawn bringing to the board is her talent for bringing people together to problem solve. Over the years, I’ve heard her talk about her job, her various roles at her church, and her other volunteer commitments throughout the Green Bay Area, and she consistently works with a variety of people to achieve goals and find solutions. She tackles the big problems, and she does it by bringing her whole team along with her. There are currently five candidates for two positions on School Board, which means there will be a primary on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18. If Dawn sounds like a candidate who you’d like to have on School Board, please consider giving her your vote in the primary and the general election on TUESDAY, APRIL 7.”
