As a candidate for Copper Mountain Community College District’s Board of Trustees, I hope to improve access and services to educational and economic opportunities to residents of the Morongo Basin. As a daughter of immigrants and first time college student, I am a product of the power of education in advancing socioeconomic mobility.

My diverse experience has provided me with growth opportunities and I’d like to share my skills and knowledge to dismantle systemic obstacles to break the cycle of poverty and open up opportunities for economic growth for all residents. Specifically, I’d like to support Copper Mountain College, its students  and the greater community from Morongo Valley to Landers to Twentynine Palms by:

  • Supporting efforts to shorten the time of completion for all academic and vocational degrees so students successfully transfer or obtain employment within 2-3 years of full-time study
  • Partnering with local businesses and organizations to provide work experience  to students with the goal of providing a strong workforce to our local economy
  • Collaborating with K-12 school districts to nurture a college going culture and creating opportunities for high school students to earn college credits

Having worked in higher education and the nonprofit sector for over 20 years, I have a proven track record of helping countless people and organizations realize their potential and reach their goals. As a nonprofit fundraiser, I’ve leveraged both traditional  and innovative ways to raise resources for community efforts. My experience in higher education, including five years in the California community college system has allowed me to help students navigate bureaucratic systems and develop self-advocacy and discipline to achieve their goals. As a yoga teacher, I’ve supported students in rediscovering their strength and stability in reaching their highest potential. As a birth worker, specifically serving low-income communities, I’ve empowered growing families to expect respect for their wishes for a positive birth experience.

I’m blessed to be born in Southern California to hardworking immigrant parents. My value for diversity stems from my childhood attending public schools in Queens, NY, one of the most diverse counties in the country. My rude awakening to the disparities between race and class came when I attended an international school in Bangkok, Thailand and a predominantly White college in suburban Philadelphia. My passion for education, diversity, health and social justice is reflected in my lifelong learning pursuits. I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Bond University in Australia, a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from the New School in New York, NY and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from San Francisco State University. My dissertation topic was about diversifying faculty in the California community college system. You can find my full credentials here.

I’m happy to call Twentynine Palms and the greater Morongo Basin home and serve the community as a yoga instructor and birth worker in the process of becoming a foster parent. I hope to utilize my skills, knowledge and experience in the nonprofit sector and community college system to improve the lives of members of the Morongo Basin.

I’m hoping to raise at least $3,000 to cover the cost of the $2,298 candidate filing fee and anything above and beyond will be used to cover campaign expenses including campaign marketing, supplies and volunteer incentives.

Thank you for your support and looking forward to continuing to serve the community.

Time to Celebrate

Some people may think it's too early to celebrate, since we'll find out the results of the election in four days. However, I'm officially closing my campaign and I want to CELEBRATE.  I want to celebrate YOU, my community in making my campaign such a success!

In July, I considered running for the Board of Trustees of Copper Mountain College, but I wasn't sure if I had the support of the community and I sure didn't have the $2,289 required to submit a candidate statement in the voter's guide. So I reached out to YOU and in about two weeks, I was able to raise those funds and the contributions just kept coming in. In three months, we raised $5,849!  The funds were just enough to cover the following expenses in addition to the candidate statement fee:

$1,506-Postage and printing of 6,000 postcards

$750-Billboard in 29 Palms

$532-Two weeks radio air time on Z107.7

$234-Miscellaneous supplies

$152-Payment processing fees

$90-Ad in High Desert Star

In total the campaign received 132 contributions with 60% of the contributions from the Morongo Basin, 30% from other CA cities (mostly from former colleagues, students and clients from the Bay Area) and 10% from out of state.  The average contribution was $40 with a handful of folks contributing a handful of times :)

This support and the kind endorsements encouraged me to continue to campaign as much as I can.  I kept these kind words close to my heart during the campaign trail to remind me of the qualities that you value in me, including my experience, my honesty, kindness, compassion, intelligence, hard working and caring.

I feel like I've already won and regardless of the results of the elections, I will continue to work hard for our community, for our future, for our prosperity.

I'd like to give a special shout out to the following folks who hosted the Zoom Meet & Greets and encouraged and supported me throughout the campaign: Teddy Quinn, Nicholas Christensen, Carrie Williams & Karen Harper, Nicky Tomblin, Deborah Tobin, and the Desert Diversity Collective.

I also must thank the following volunteers and supporters: Lisa Rae Black, David Johnson, Lauren Wolpert, Edith Ruth Pedraza, Stephanie Ballard, Mee Vaj, Jason Bolt, Jeff Tedtaotao, Joseph Candelaria, Sandy Smith, Cathy Inscore, Roger Thomas, Ann Brahmani Bost, Clea Benson, Tyler "Thomas" Short, Democrats of the Morongo Basin, Jo Ann Bollen, Dr. Debra Savitt, Sara Lee, Gayle Anderson, Marietta Terrill, Carly Valentine and everyone who has shared my social media posts and encouraged folks to vote for me.

Thank YOU and get out the VOTE!
