I am a 44-year-old man, born and raised in Watts. I was raised by immigrant parents and I am the second oldest of 8 brothers. I am married and formed a beautiful family of 4 children. I am a parishioner and parish council member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. I have dedicated my life to empowering our youth to prosper, and I have served as a core member for youth ministry since 2007.

My Passion to get involved with the community started in 2009 by assisting in controversial DUI checkpoints against immigrants . This lead to organizing with a group called L.A. Voice with the help of St. John the Baptist church.

In 2012, I applied for a position as a Planning Commissioner in the city and was elected. During my time as commissioner, I took pride in having made possible the construction of LA Fitness, Waba Grill, Jersey Mike’s, Chipotle, and Coffee Bean Leaf Tea. Other accomplishments include the addition of a new medical building at KAISER Permanente and its 800-car garage structure.

There is still a lot of work to be done, and this is why I have decided to run for City Council. It is time to move our city forward, to progress and bring stability. My term in office will focus on issues such as Affordable housing, Homelessness, Programs for Rape and Domestic violence victims, and Youth School Programs. I am Mario Maciel Jr. and I am Committed to Change, but most of all I am Committed to YOU, the residents of Baldwin park!
