My name is Brittany Soto, I'm 19, and I am running for Comal ISD's Single Member District 1. I attended Comal ISD for 14 years and I am a proud member of Canyon High School’s Class of 2020.

I am running because I believe parents, students, staff, and the entire Comal ISD community should be aware of the decisions being made and be able to have a clear understanding of every issue and where the board stands. Comal needs greater transparency, more accountability, and better communication. When the pandemic hit, there was uncertainty and confusion. More accessible board meetings and better communication around the decision making process would provide clarity and reassurance in the future. When elected to the Comal ISD Board I will make sure that all meetings are accessible to everyone, in person and online. Live streaming board meetings will create the opportunity for more community involvement. Meetings need to be scheduled at a consistent time that does not conflict with the regular in school schedule so that faculty and students can attend. These changes will allow more  participation in our district's decision making process.

Comal ISD is growing and the student population is rapidly becoming more diverse. The current Comal Board, administration and faculty do not reflect the makeup of the students. I believe that the Board should work to develop diversity among Comal faculty and staff.

Students and parents have brought many instances of racism to the attention of the Comal ISD Board. When elected I will develop a process for addressing these complaints and work to create a welcoming environment for our diverse student population.

I am running because I believe the current board members have lost sight of who they are there to serve. It should be an honor to help serve your school and community, but it seems like some members have lost sight of what is really important. The safety, security, and trust of everyone involved should be the main priority. We have let our elected officials (of all kinds local, state, and nation) get away with things that directly affect us for far too long. It's time to either hold our leaders accountable and ensure they create the change we need or elect someone who will do what it takes to get the job done right.

Thank you!

Although we didn’t win this election, the fight is far from over! I want to thank every single one of you for making this all possible. I would not have gotten this far without you all. This is my first election, but it will not be my last. Thank you so much for all of your support! I can not wait to see what lays ahead :)
