After 28 years in practice, the Alameda County Superior Court appointed Mark Fickes to be a Superior Court Commissioner. He is currently assigned to the Fremont Hall of Justice where he hears traffic and other infractions. In Fiscal Year 2022, more than 80% of criminal filings and more than 60% of all court filings in the State of California were traffic and other infractions. Most people charged with infractions do not have attorneys to represent them and are completely unfamiliar with the criminal justice system. Many of these people's only contact with a courtroom will be in traffic court. Thus, Mark serves as the face of the Alameda County Superior Court. For Mark, it is a privilege to make sure that every person who appears before him is treated with dignity, is afforded an opportunity to be seen and heard, and is given a fair hearing. Mark strives to assure equality, fairness and justice in each and every case he hears, irrespective of a person's race, national origin, sexual orientation or gender expression, profession or education. Mark's commitment to equal access to justice has been recognized in his recent appointment by California Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero to the California Judicial Council's Traffic Advisory Committee which is tasked with making recommendations to the council for improving the administration of justice in the area of traffic procedure, practice, and case management and in other areas as stated in the fish and game, boating, forestry, public utilities, parks and recreation, and business licensing bail schedules.
